Mumbai Stories takes, as its subject, street life within the Indian metropolis. I’m interested in the ways the city, with increasingly westernised forms of living, shapes its subjects, through a subtle interplay of the environment and individual gestures. This work continues my fascination with the relationship between documentary photography and the city, by examining some of the complexities of photography as a factual or fictive medium.
'Rowland, similar to the American photographer Philip-Lorca diCorcia’s street photography series, Heads, lights up his objects with a flashlight, thus turning from observer into a scene director with the street as his location. This reminds us of the photograph’s fictive character.' FK Magazine
